The taste of celery salt is the taste of home.

Things I miss about Chicago:

  • Vegetarian Chicago hotdogs with celery salt, pickle, relish, mustard, sport peppers, tomato, yellow mustard.
  • Lack of crowds, even in trendy neighborhoods.
  • It doesn’t smell like urine or rotting garbage.
  • The Hopleaf & it’s CB&J Sandwich
  • Wolfbait & B Girls
  • The system of street numbering
  • Neighborhoods filled with low-rise buildings.
  • Lake Michigan
  • The skyline glows pink from Evanston
  • Reggies and the Bottom Lounge
  • Affordable rent in nice apartments with parking spaces and in-unit laundry.
  • Andersonville and Lincoln Square
  • The Green Mill
  • The Irish-American Heritage Center
  • WNUR-FM and WBEZ-FM
  • The Museum of Surgical Science
  • Street festivals
  • Heating lamps at L stops
  • Riding my bike without fearing for my life
  • Steppenwolf and Goodman theatres
  • Rick Bayless’s restaurants
  • Boulevards in summer, when they close them off so people can picnic
  • The Book Cellar
  • Glog
  • Watching people make their “Malort face” (totally different from missing Malort itself…no one misses Malort)

Things that NYC does better than Chicago:

  • Pizza
